Slugged at .454 NORMAL? -- 45 ACP Rock Island Armory 1911 made in Philippines

Anyone else have one of these pistols?

Is .454 pretty much standard for this foreign barrel to be slugged at?

Shooting .452 lead bullets or .451 jacketed bullets with minimum recommended start charge does really well with obturation and has zero leading.

I'm just looking at getting a .454 sizing die for my Lyman 450 to make sure the bore seals good for lower velocity shooting. Any ideas?

Yup..my Llama 45 is a .454" too.

What is the metallurgy like?  A lot of arms built in the PI can be substandard because the cut a lot of corners like heat treat and case hardening parts or low grade steel.  Just curious.

At $300 used, I couldn't pass it up.
(even if it is foreign)
It still has a tight lock up & when I got it wasn't even broken in yet.

The mold is Lyman #452460 200gr. 45auto/45acp which drops bullets between .454 & .455 and drops a bit heavy at 214gr.
(not really sure what alloy mix of wheel weights)

I got an awesome deal on 500 Hornady 200gr.  .452" lead SWC and at 25 yards can get a 4" group standing/unsupported.
(after drifting the rear sight because of a 4" point of impact off of point of aim)
Sights are adjusted now and are perfect!

It shoots great with those .452 rounds but would like to see how a .454 may tighten that group up a bit.

Thanks guys!

Just as a side note the RIA/Armscor guns are great. Very inexpensive but well built. I carry a 1911 CS (compact) by them daily and have put thousands of rounds through it over the last year and a half. Not so much as a single hiccup so far. Oh and mine has the 3.5" barrel and is as accurate as my Springfield Armory Loaded model with 5" barrel.

joec,

It's good to know someone else has good luck with the company. And YES, they do make a fine gun for the money.

teknikaldude,

Externally they are great. Internally they don't have anything that stands out as substandard besides some rough milling.

I have always liked parkerized for a "1911" and Rock Island makes them very good.

I'll have to post some pics of my nice used parkerized 5" barreled 1911 by Rock Island Armory.

In my case I broke the recoil spring bushing the first time I fired the gun. It was do to me not seating it properly and not a fault of the gun. I sent it back to Arnel after speaking to him on the phone. I told him the gun was intended for daily carry and I wanted Novak Trijicon night sights installed if possible. Well 5 days after he received the gun it was back in my hands all I paid for was the price of the sights with they gun given a complete going over and tune by him. The gun was refitted with the spring bushing, and springs changed to handle heavier loads of +P ammo as well as a polished feed ramp. I might add he sighted the gun perfectly and finished off the front sight to also match the top of the slide. It fires every brand of ammo I've put through it from ball to JHP including +P stuff. He also changed the extractor and all of this work is still covered under their full life time warranty on the gun regardless of owner. Top notch customer service bar none. He also mailed me a list of all springs used and what to replace with when needed as well as the original sights back. Oh and I paid his price for the sights purchased from Brownell.
